Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency for Virginia after severe storms battered the central and eastern part of the state, leaving at least three dead and dozens of homes destroyed.
An early round of storms Wednesday afternoon brought a suspected tornado to Waverly, Va. , just outside of Petersburg. Three people were killed when their mobile home was picked apart, according to Virginia State Police.

In Central Virginia, near Appomattox, some 40 structures were damaged after a suspected tornado ripped through the flat farmlands along Rt. 460.
Trees were reported down all over the state and flooding became a concern early evening in Northern Virginia where over an inch and one half of rain fell in a short time period. Parts of the Capital Beltway and Spout Run Parkway were closed because of road hazards.
As of 8:45 p.m., one tornado warning remained in southern Maryland as the system began to exit out of the area.
